Outdoor patio and dining area on the grounds of Rutland Hall Hotel with view of Rutland Water

At Rutland Hall, we love taking the time to get to know our family a little better. This week, we’re delighted to hear from Karen, our finance assistant, who tells us all about her career in hospitality and finance and her favourite parts of the job:

What’s your name and role at Rutland Hall?

My name is Karen Dilkes, and I’m the finance/payroll assistant at Rutland.

What prompted your decision to join the hospitality industry, and how did your career  begin?

Initially, I was looking for a job in accounts/payroll that was close to home. This role at Rutland Hall came up, and it ticked all the boxes for me. So, naturally, I applied for the position – and fast forward 6 years, I’m still here, and I really enjoy it.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy the challenge of working to deadlines, and the people I work with.

What does your average day at Rutland Hall look like?

I spend my day processing accounts, managing wages and dealing with HR queries.

What are your favourite parts of working in hospitality?

I love the atmosphere of people holidaying on the resorts – especially when it is busy.

What makes Rutland Hall a great place to work?

I work with a lovely team, and Rutland Hall is in a nice area with great views.

Do you have any particularly special/funny experiences with a guest/colleague that you’d  like to share?

I was awarded employee of the year, but I think that was because everyone used to come and sit on the chair in my office – it became like a consultation chair!

What local activities would you recommend to families?

There are lots of great local leisure activities, including a golf course.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love spending my time reading, and I also enjoy walking.

How would you describe Rutland Hall?

I would describe Rutland Hall as a peaceful country retreat.

How do you envision your hospitality journey moving forward?

With all the new changes, I think the hotel will get much busier and our workload will likely increase, which I’m really looking forward to.

On behalf of everyone at Rutland Hall, we’d like to say a huge thank you to Karen for taking the time out of her bustling schedule to offer us insight into her career in hospitality and finance.
