Green initiatives: What we’re doing…

Significant Sustainability Milestone

Serious sleuthing saves £000s in water leaks

Rutland Hall Hotel is proud to announce a significant achievement in its ongoing commitment to sustainability, following the successful completion of an extensive water leak repair project. The initiative, spearheaded by Andrew Barnes, Estates Manager, Rutland Hall and Richard Scott, Director of Avon Water Services, has resulted in remarkable environmental and financial savings for the eco-friendly hotel.

Meticulous data analysis

Solving the leaky mystery

“Approximately 12 months ago, I noticed an unusually high water usage at Rutland Hall Hotel, prompting a closer investigation into the water meter readings. Following my discovery that the water meter had failed, I took immediate action. When the meter was reactivated at 2am, it revealed an alarming rate of 6,000 litres of water being consumed per hour—despite minimal activity on the hotel premises at that time,” explains Andy.

Further investigation confirmed that the water was being lost due to leaks, amounting to a staggering 144 cubic meters of water wasted every day—equivalent to the volume of an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

The financial impact of this water leak was approximately £450 per day, translating to an annual loss of £164,250.Through meticulous data analysis and the dedication of Andy and Richard to solve the leaky mystery, the team was able to trace the origin of the water loss back over seven years. By isolating and repairing five key leaks, the team has now successfully reduced water loss by £370 per day. Impressively, the savings generated from this project have already covered the costs of the repair works conducted by Avon Water Services in just 95 days.

Commitment to sustainability

“This project is a testament to Rutland Hall Hotel’s commitment to sustainability,” explains Molly Tomlin, Business Development Manager and Sustainability lead for the hotel. “Not only have we made significant strides in reducing our environmental impact, but we’ve also demonstrated the importance of proactive maintenance and vigilance in resource management. This success story aligns perfectly with the hotel’s broader sustainability goals, including our initiatives in water quality management in India,” adds Adrian Pickard, Director and General Manager.

Rutland Hall Hotel is proud to share this achievement with the wider community and industry partners, showcasing the potential for significant sustainability gains through diligent operations and innovative problem-solving.
